Back in July 2011 Jay Electronica tweeted that, “Act II: Patents Of Nobility (the turn)” was done. Yet we had no release date. Then March 8th of 2012, he took to twitter to tell the world once again that the album was done. “Thank you for your patience and support. The Album will be turned in tomorrow evening. The wait ends,” he tweeted.

You ask, why isn’t it bumping from your cars, iPads, computer speakers and headphones? Good question… Jay-Z has gone on record and said there isn’t a single on the entire album. He wants Electronica to go back in the studio and add a single or two it before it gets released. This according to Questlove is the reason for the delay. However, Quest also mentioned it’s was Jay-Z’s favorite record of 2012. My question to Jay and the public is do we need a single? Exhibit C [here] dropped late 2009 and was ranked as one of the top hip hop singles of the year. It got radio play and ultimately was influential in getting Electronica signed. Is Exhibit C a radio friendly single? I would say no. It isn’t a typical song due to it not having a chorus or hook, but it was embraced by hip hop. Don’t get me started on Exhibit A [here], which is also said to be on the album.

Let’s talk about one of my favorite albums ever, The Notorious B.I.G.’s, “Ready to Die.” Biggie’s album wasn’t made with many radio friendly singles. Juicy is a great song which stood the test of time thanks to its stellar lyrics and a being a “rags-to-riches chronicle.” It’s not even close to being the best song on Ready To Die. Nor was it the reason the album sold. Ask anyone who owns that album, and they will tell you they play it from start to finish. It is a complete work of art. My question to the public and Jay-Z is, do you really want to make a single for the sake of making a single? If P Diddy told Biggie he needs four radio singles, it would ultimately ended up hurting the album. Another single off that album, One More Chance, needed to be revamped [here] to make it radio friendly [here] and also to give it a commercial appeal. Faith Evans was added to the track and the lyrics were change completely. We would understand if Roc Nation did something similar.

Jay-Z doesn’t have the greatest track record when it comes to promoting artists. Method Man, DMX, LL Cool J, and Joe Budden to name a few have been shelved or not promoted enough under Jay-Z’s watch. Makes one wonder if Jay-Z would have told Biggie to go re-recorded Ready To Die. Could it be a form of jealousy? One would hope not. Jay-Z is an international superstar and will go down as one of the greatest MC’s ever. But he is far from a great executive (See Michael Jordan). Looking back Electronica would have been better off signing with Diddy or being around in the 1990-96 era of Hip-Hop.

For Hip Hop to gain respect and credibility again, we need artist like Jay Electronica. If his album is as a good as Jay-Z claims, then release it already. The public will embrace it like we embraced the unorthodox singles, Exhibit A and C. Just give us something… We’ve been waiting for over two years now!

Ok, so far we have covered Bow Ties, shoes, and ties. And now we will talk about matching shirts with said ties. This took admittedly longer than I liked. It seems so simple, I went to art school, damn it! I know my colors, shades, hues, and tones. I know my complementary, analogous, triadic and tetradic color schemes. Solid colors are easy but the pattern matching was a little harder. Who knew gingham and polka dots don’t go together? Or maybe they do. Or you shouldn’t ear to different stripe colors going the same way. Or maybe you do? Essentially, there are no rules but there are a few basic guidelines to get you started. Below are a few and then you can add and subtract at will. Enjoy!

The Justice League Movie & the Multiverse

As the summer slowly creeps up the East Coast, expectations for the new Superman movie are starting to hit a boiling point. Along with those expectations the movie/comic world have all gotten their capes in a bunch over the idea of a new Justice League movie.

We can all agree, The Avengers have completely changed the game and taken the concept of comic book movies to new heights, somewhere near that place Iron Man flew to at the end of the movie. In my opinion, everyone seems to be expecting DC to follow suit and come out with end all be all Justice League movie. I think that’s a bad move, here’s why.

You never want follow what your competitor does, it just makes you look desperate. Don’t try to retell the origins of all these characters, we’ve been there before. If you know what the bat symbol or that diamond shaped “S” stands for, you know who and how they got to be who they are. Take that built in knowledge and go nuts. DC is known for its Multiverse, take one of those stories and make a movie people aren’t expecting.

For example: InJustice: Gods Among Us is a story line where the Joker Kills Lois lane and destroys Metropolis with a Nuke. This results with Superman & Wonder Woman creating Marshall Law across the planet on crime and war. Batman and a handful of other heroes join forces to stop him. Although this puts Supes squarely in the center as a villain, it also makes for great story telling.

This is a small sampling of the stories the Multiverse has to offer: The Amazons at war with Atlantis, Thomas Wayne (Bruce’s Father) becoming Batman, Superman landing in Russia instead of America and becoming the Red Son, a world where The Flash was the only superhero, etc.

If DC ever wants to step out of the shadow of the Avengers with its Justice League Movie, they need to come up with something better than the big 7 coming together to fight a great evil. Go Multiverse and give us something different.

Final Countdown | Arrested Development Season 4

Annyong!! May 26 will mark the return of one of the greatest written (Cam Voice) TV series of all time, Arrested Development. Thanks to the good people over at Netflix (aka my only source of cable TV), the show has been rebooted with 15 new episodes. The trailer was released this past Sunday and shows the Bluths and company in their usual glory. One thing I have been hearing from the actors of the show is that each episode is dedicated to an character. Jason Bateman on a recent interview with Jimmy Kimmel [here] said, ‘All the action happens at the same time.. it can only work on Netflix where it is released on the same day, you can stop my episode if you see Gob go by on his segway and see where he is going. ‘ I want to have high hopes for the reboot of the series, but only time will tell as we prepare for the final countdown (pun intended) in the next two weeks. 2 Weeks Without Facebook

Here at ToT, we’ve done a few things to unplug like No Technology Week or gave up porn or deactivated our Facebook accounts. The last thing I did about 2 weeks ago. Not for some trendy reasons or addiction. Simply because I wanted to use my time better and 80% of FB is noise (Ant knows what I’m talking about) and the rest is stuff you actually care about. I didn’t make a big “good bye cruel Facebook!” announcement. There was no scandal that “made” me take it down. Just deactivated the account and kept it moving. I forgot the amount of apps I used my FB login for, so I had to change that. Also, the amount of events that are ONLY on FB and not anywhere else. I had to hunt down info for an event I was djing at! other than those 2 things, it’s been kind of liberating. The other blow back was a few foreign friends called, whatsapp, or emailed like “You man you OK!?” I had forgotten that I use FB to connect and keep up with those folks as well. So that sucked. I think, I was spending way too much non productive time on it than anything else.

Initially, I thought I would use twitter or pinterest or google+ more, which was partially true but I still don’t constantly check or get updates like I did with FB. I post things on Google+ or Pinterest every so often but not an everyday thing. By quitting Facebook cold turkey, I’ve been using said time to research (mobile development), read (The Great Gatsby and comic books), write, and learn things (new language: japanese). Now I could of done all of those things with FB but I realized I was using FB as my “pop news source” of what’s going on in general. So I just unplugged. My job is web/internet based so I can never truly unplug but I definitely prioritize better now and lowered my social media consumption. Will I join FB again? Probably but I won’t be as addicted as I used to be. Facebook is awesome for connecting and reconnecting with folks from far and away or even old friends but I think it was too ingrained in my daily life and I had to take a break. Now I’ll just be addicted to else, like FourSquare. lol

Uzoechi Osisioma Emenike aka MNEK, is a young (18) cat from the UK. A singer, writer, and producer, I was introduced to his music from Soul Bounce and then followed the rabbit hole called soundcloud. He’s done some amazing covers, refixes, and just cool music. From Sade to Rosie Gaines to Janet, he gives the refixes a new life and vigor. My faves are the Janet cover and the White Noise covers which pays homage to the orignal songs but also updating them and giving them a fresh coat of cool. TOYS ARE NOT JUST FOR KIDS

Hey TOTs, it’s me Ant coming at you with some grown activities. I want to know what you all think about the use of “toys” in relationships. For instance, how many of ya’ll agree with “toys” in the bedroom? How many of ya’ll think that “toys” enhance or detract from the sex in the relationship? How many of ya’ll have the guts to try out new things in the bedroom?

Well for one, toys are used as a form of enjoyment/pleasure in the bedroom. I have encountered some toys that were useful to enhance my lady’s pleasure. Now I am the first one to say that you should be the “toy” but there is nothing wrong with adding a little bit of extra fun to mix.

Sex is just not about up and down, left and right, heaving breathing… it is about 2, 3 4, 5 people getting down and nasty (JUST KIDDING). Nah, it is about two people connecting, sharing in each other’s emotional and physical desires, and trust. It is about being able to be open and honest about what pleases you and desires and fantasies you have. Sex in essence is a form of communication.

When it comes to sex toys, the choices are limitless. Even some household objects can be used (I know… kinky). I know this one woman who buys a two pack Pulsar Sonic tooth brush (one for her teeth, the other for fun). Flat hair brushes as paddles for spanking, panty hose for gagging and tying. Ice cubes for altering sensations.

So the next time your man or lady wants to add to the mix, don’t get offended. Listen to what they have to say; it doesn’t mean that you are not pleasing them, it is just a way for you to grow and explore each other in a way you haven’t before.

You’re probably thinking, “How can you recommend iPhone Apps when you’ve been a Android fan for years?” Well the truth of the matter is I’ve cross back to the Dark side like the crack did to Pookie, in New Jack. Except with out the health issues and ashy lips. Yes, I’ve gone back to Apple and bought an iPhone 5 and soon I’ll buy a Mac Book Pro and completely sell my design soul to the House that Jobs built.

(remember when that was a thing?!)

The thing I love most about this task manager is every tasked is timed. For me it helps a lot when I’m working on a project and the time frame is limited. Everything about Rise screams sexy. The design of the app is nothing more than a clock that you slide up and down as you set when the alarm will go off. I love that the time you set the alarm changes the colors of the app to match the time of day. Really cool stuff. Only down side I’ve found is the fact you need to set the alarm every night. The alarm needs to active in order to be effective. If they ever figure that out this would be the perfect alarm for me.

Famous Last Words | Near Life Experience

Unbeknownst to the rest of the Table of Truth, I had a near death experience a few weeks back, or as Tyler Durden (Brad Pitt) would put it, ‘A near life experience.’ The bus I was riding went through a railing, down a hill and by the grace of God and Science (see what I did there) didn’t flip over. The whole time I was thinking, this isn’t the way my story will end. A few seats up, this 26 year old guy sitting next to his friend was screaming at the top of his lungs. When the bus stopped and we all checked on each other (no one was hurt seriously by the way), when I got to the section where that guy was screaming, his friend was making fun of him for screaming like Jonah Hill in Accepted [here]

It got me thinking two things, what I would and what I wouldn’t want to be my famous last words. Lets start with the would not’s.

“Put out the bloody cigarette!!”

Who: Saki, to a fellow officer while in a trench during World War One, for fear the smoke would give away their positions. He was then shot by a German sniper who had heard the remark.
- Not sure who is to blame here, the guy who lit the cigarette or the guy who said put out the cigarette. Just a terrible way to die and a words I would not want to be my last words.

“You be good. See you tomorrow. I love you.”

Who: Alex, African Grey Parrot used in comparative psychology research at Brandeis University

- I’m trying to be a man of my words and a man of honor. Saying I will see you tomorrow and I don’t show aren’t very honorable things. But in Alex’s defense he was a parrot and only knew a handful of phrases.

Who: Joseph Henry Green, upon checking his own pulse.

- LoL… Damn. Definitely not how I would want to be my last words. I have no clue how to jumpstart my heart.

Nah, I just made that one up. But boy that one can go either way. Lets check out words that I wouldn’t mind going out with.

Who: James French, a convicted murderer, was sentenced to the electric chair. He shouted these words to members of the press who were to witness his execution.

- Bawse (Rick Ross Voice). This convicted murder obviously does not give a fuck and went out with a sense of humor. Pretty sure a few members of the press chuckled with that comment.

“Dammit… Don’t you dare ask God to help me.”

Who: Joan Crawford to her housekeeper who began to pray aloud.

- Now that is commitment this lady didn’t believe in God and on her death bed, she stuck to her guns. R.I.P. Joan Crawford, enjoy the depths of hell.

“I should never have switched from Scotch to Martinis.”

Who: Humphrey Bogart

- Who needs a doctor when you have Humphrey Bogart knowing what is good and bad for your body.

Backin middle school I was introduced to East Coast Hip-Hop music by my cousin, an aspiring rapper himself. Living in the bay, it was mostly Bay Area and Socal music on the radio like E-40, Snoop, Dr. Dre, C-Bo, JT tha Bigga Figga, and yes, even MC Hammer. But I was more into Kool G Rap, Wu Tang, Black Moon, Nas, and Jeru The Damaja. Admittedly, I didn’t really get into De La Soul or Tribe until I was older. The only outlet I had for this type of music was Rap City, YO! MTV Raps, THe Box, and CMC Music channel. I was suburban black kid listening to gritty tales of the urban underground I was by no means anywhere clost to a thug but still enjoyed the drug inf fueled musings of former hustlas trying to get by. Man Resume | How to Tie a Tie

What it do fellas! Today we are going to talk about How to Tie a Tie. Admittedly, I didn’t really know how to tie a tie or even own ties till after college. A very stylish older coworker who was retiring and brought in a box of about 50 ties, and gave them to the guys in the office. “Cam, you should not be in your 20s and not know to dress like an adult,” he said to me. I was still in my jeans, tee, and sneakers phase. But I understood where he was coming from. It was time to upgrade my Man Resume! So, he gave me about 10 ties, taught me the basic Windsor and sent me on my way. Fast forward some 10 years later and I now have an expanded tie collection, have learned to tie a bow tie, and even enjoy wearing a suit. Below is a pretty good top to bottom overview of tie knowledge and even the 4 popular styles to tie to get you started.

Hey my fellow TOTs, how’s life treating you? OH! Wait… no need for you to tell me because you already blasted your life on Facebook. How’s that new relationship going? Hmmm… let me guess… It’s going good, or its going bad. How do I know this before you even talk to me…? Because you put your life on blast for the entire world to read. Now I don’t mind if you post about your endeavors, your vacations etc. But please, please you don’t have to tell me that your significant other pissed you off this morning, or that you’re lonely and you need company. Who wants to go in Facebook and enjoy themselves and instead is confronted by a two paragraph testimonial about your personal life. Something’s aren’t any bodies business. My favorite… tacky Facebook post is the ones where people invite EVERYONE to either a baby shower or birthday or wedding… I mean that is what the event tab is for. Not everyone on your Facebook page is Dr. Phil or Wendy Williams. After all, what is Facebook for? Social connection… but it doesn’t have to connect to your bad ass kids, or your every waking move, or your significant other. In my opinion I would change the censorship on Facebook, you get 3 depressing, bitching, venting, crying post a month… the rest, you better pick up a phone and dial a friend or WRITE IN A JOURNAL!!!!!! Thank you, have a nice weekend. I can’t wait to see you on Facebook. 1.

Netflix adds Cartoon Network to its instant queue

Yes the title above is correct. Your favorite shows have finally come to one of the best streaming services out. Netflix adds Cartoon Network classics to it’s already extensive line up. Pulling in shows from both its prime-time programming like Adventure Time, Regular Show and Ben 10 and Adult Swim with The Boondocks, The Venture Bros. and Robot Chicken.

If you’re like me then you’re probably thinking… This is cool but what about classic shows like Samurai Jack, Power Puff Girls, Dexter’s Laboratory? Well all of these shows have been added to the library as well along with shows like Courage the Cowardly Dog, Cow and Chicken and one of my all-time favorites: The Kids Next Door. (A truly underrated show that should get more love for its writing and animation.)

If there is any downside to this great news: most shows currently only have their first season available. I’m sure subsequent shows are in the pipeline but for now something is better than nothing. This is a great starting point to catch up on some great shows you might have missed in the past or a great way to introduce your children to shows you grew up with instead of the crap that’s out now. (takes off old man hat.) Plus, it gives you something to watch until Arrested Development returns later this month.

Pet Peeve | Sunglasses on the Subway

As I take a break from watching Game of Thrones and write my weekly blog, I would like to address something that has been upsetting me as of late. Sunglasses on the Subway or SoS if you may. As Summer approaches on the East Coast and more sun is shown throughout the day, there is a need for sunglasses, I get this. But when the night hits, you are indoors or going through a subway tunnel, that’s when it ends. You HEAR ME OLD Spanish Lady who sits across from me every morning. Seriously, there are a ton of reasons why I would understand wearing sunglasses, they can be prescription, you can be the victim of domestic violence, your mascara can be off, or your blind, which means you wont be reading this, you get the point. I will always remember what a coworker of mine told me a few years back when I asked him why he wore his sunglasses on the subway, “I wear it to stare at people on the train so they don’t know I’m looking at them.” That’s the shit right there I’m talking about and I know that’s what that nosy ass lady who sits across from me does, cause I can see her eyes. Shit… I made this blog way to personal today, but let this be a warning to the person I saw at 96th street reading in the dark. If you take anything away from this blog today, please remember sunglasses are made to block the sun, you know what else is great at blocking the sun… underground tunnels. Cut the shit out people.

The Gentleman’s Guide to Shoes

As I navigate into my 30s, I realize that my shoe collection fell into three categories: dancing shoes, “vegas slippers” and sneakers. Let me explain. I am a B-Boy (or breakdancer to the lay men), a house dancer, and a hip-hop dancer. For a good chunk of my life, I test jeans by if i can break in them. My sneakers were the same way, comfortable, look fly, and ready to dance in. “Vegas Slippers” were shoes I would use if I had to wear nice shoes to the clubs. For a long time they were Clarks Wallabees but also nice loafers. And lastly, sneakers. I was a big fan of pumas (fat laces and everything, I told you, I am a B-Boy), Adidas, and later on SB Dunks. Hip-Hop till I died!

And then 30s hit. Time to step my game up. I might look like I’m 25 but should at least not dress like it. In came the ties, chukkas, and I bought my first suit. The list above are the basic “grown man” shoes every man should at least be aware of. I, myself, am still beefing up the collection. Personally, I think you only need maybe 3 (Desert, Wingtips, and Derby) but to each his own. Also, I am pretty sure Broque and Wingtips are the same thing. This doesn’t mean you need to give up your sneakers. No, no, no, you won’t catch me dancing in wingtips (unless at a wedding) but having a basic understanding of “dress” shoes will serve you well when you are going to a wedding, job interview, or black tie affair. Knowledge is power my friend.

The road to living debt free

I find it strange that in a capitalistic society talking about money is so taboo. Speaking about our financial situation is very important if we ever want to truly be debt free and I’m willing to start the conversation. In this post I want to talk about the responsibility of taking control of your debt and facing the choices you’ve made in the past.

In a recent article in Money magazine they stated that the average person has roughly $20k worth of student loan debt. This isn’t counting any credit card debt or personal loans, just education. Fortunately for me I was able to clear my student loan debt earlier this year and in that same breath, I am still within the $20k range due to poor money management and wreck less credit card spending. These bills were accumulated over the course of last 10 years of partying, shopping, family emergencies, etc. Being un/self-employed didn’t help the situation much either.

During that time, like you I was ducking creditors like Neo did bullets in the Matrix. It was then I decided that if I were to ever be debt free I would have to change the way I did things. Over the last year I’ve taken control of my finances and stopped running from creditors just like Neo did when he finally became The One. That’s when things started to change. I focused in on my student loan and wiped it out. Making consistent and increased payments, I paid down my loan till it was gone. With the confidence built from striking one bill off my list I started accepting those calls from creditors and gave them the truth.

Men lie, women lie but numbers don’t.

If you only have a finite amount of money it can only go to a finite number of places. It just so happened all my creditors lived in the same place and none of my money wanted to go there. Once I understood that it became easier and easier to deal with these calls. I was so empowered with information that I started making them settle on what I decided I felt I could give them as payment on what I owed.

Granted, this isn’t the best option and it won’t for everyone. Taking a settlement will give your credit score an Ryu Dragon punch. But like everything else, time heals all wounds and I’d rather suffer a little financial pain now when I’m relatively young than suffer worst pains when I’m older because of a credit card bill I didn’t pay 20 years prior. We’re getting older and the conversation about retirement plans are becoming more and more important with each passing year. This is a conversation we can’t keep putting off till later. Later is now, let’s work together to live debt free.

Movie Doppelganger | Same Name Different Film

Have you ever been channel surfing and see the name of a movie that peaks your interest? You turn it to that film only to find out this isn’t the movie you were looking for. It has the same name, but it’s a very different film, a movie doppelganger if you may. After some research I found there is no set rules on naming films, which means one can’t copyright a film name. You can use the exact same title, but the movie story line would have to be different. Here is a list of movies that I have turned to, not knowing the movie doppleganger was on.

Gladitor – One is a classic film about Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the armies of the North, general of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true Emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife. And in which he will have his vengeance, in this life or the next. The other stars the fat guy from the film FX and Cuba Gooding Jr. -

Bad Boys – I’ve heard the Bad Boys with Sean Penn is actually a better movie then the one with Will Smith and Martin Lawerence. To bad I will never know. *Kanye Shrug*

Running Scared – The running Scared starring Paul Walker was suprisingly entertaining. Granted I have not seen it since and always run into the Gregory Hines and Billy Crystal cop movie. I guess there has to be a reason why, the Paul Walker one is hardly on TV.

The Avengers – The Marvel movie is not on cable yet, but for the past 20 years my mind will go into a brain fart and turn it to the Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman one.

The Fan – One has the vampire from To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar and Robert De Niro. And the other is a surprisingly good 80′s thriller. Maybe I should put the other picture up… Hmmm?

Crash – One is about racial tension and how we all are connected. The other one is about a sexual connection with crash victims. What? Who green lighted that movie? And why haven’t I watched the whole thing?

So what did we learn during this Movie Doppelganger list; Scarlett Johansson’s suit looks strikingly close to the one Uma Thurman is wearing above. If you want to frustrate people like myself, who only have basic cable and Netflix, put on a movie that I’m dying to see because I refuse to pay for HBO or other Premium services. With that being said, what are some films I left out that you guys might have ran into while channel surfing?

5 Web Apps to Help Your Small Business

What it do party people! Aside from co-hosting ToT, I am a jack of all trades and master of some. This has led me to run my own creative business called Mookie Creative (and also many collaborations with Pope under Random Order Media Group). Since the cost of doing business virutally is relatively low, there are a host of web applications available to aid you in this endeavor.

Why Use Web Apps?

First, I love web apps! I was an early adopter of cloud based web applications when I started freelancing because many were free, easy to use, and greatly increased my productivity. As mobile phones caught up, I started gravitate to apps that were cross platform (phone, tablet, laptop, desktop) with little interruption in my workflow. Below are 5 that can easily help you grow your business, organize your thoughts, and relieve some headaches you are bound to encounter in your business.

*Disclaimer: I actually use the apps named below and am not getting any money or kickbacks to mention them. Although it would be nice!

Dropbox

Before iCloud was the new hotness, Dropbox gave was first with 2GB of storage for free that allows you backup files on multiple platforms. I use this practically daily as I work on different machines and love that I can design something on my desktop and head out and continue on the same file on my laptop. It has some of the best and easiest storage in the cloud. You can share files with other people, have a personal public folder to give private links to clients, and most importantly, it has an app for all devices (ipad and droid tablets included). Honorable mention to Google Drive, which is free for up to 5GB and is fast becoming popular in it’s own right.

Evernote

I always find and research topics and ideas around the web daily. Evernote, helps me organize the madness. You can make notebooks and add notes, ideas, photos, voice notes, tag everything and even share with others. It is free for all but you can pay for more features.

Mailchimp

Mookie Public Service Announcement #1: All businesses in the 21st century should have a email mailing list and strategy for reaching and retaining those users. Email marketing is essential for growing your business, actively reaching your audience and keeping your business on peoples minds. Mailchimp is a well designed and useful newsletter app that will help you collect and track emails. AND it’sfree for your first 2,000 subscribers.

Outright

The most annoying and frustrating part of a business is taxes and bookkeeping. Outright is quite possibly the simplest bookkeeping app you will see. For sole proprietors and small LLC’s, this app lets you keep a handle on your finances and make your accountant love you. Free trial with a full featured pay upgrade, it definitely is better than keeping those receipts in that shoebox in your home office. It also connects with popular services like Paypal, Esty, and Freshbooks.

Sprout Social

Mookie Public Service Announcement #2: All businesses in the 21st century must have a functional social media strategy! This doesn’t mean you need to sign up for everything under the sun (Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Tumblr, etc.), but it does mean you should realistically look at these services and see how they can help and enhance your brand. With that said, Sprout Social helps you organize those services and most importantly provides on point analytics for ROI (return-on-investment) of your hard work in social media. It’s free for basic services and reporting and then a monthly fee for expanded features. I cannot stress enough the importance of having analytics of your social media efforts. You will be surprised what is actually working.

One thing you might have noticed, is that each app I have mentioned is based on the “Freemium” model, which offers the app for free and you can pay for expanded features and services. It is a good way to test what works for you and then go from there. These helped get my business life together and hopefully will help you as well.

Music Monday: DJ Nerstylist – Gray Areas 2

As many of you know, I am from California, specifically the Northern part referred to as the Bay Area. Home to a really eclectic mix of deejays that grew up in the realm of massive raves, underground hip-hop shows, b-boy jams, and jungle nights that shaped a lot of the way we spin today. One such deejay is the Bay Area’s DJ Nerstylist. I met him at the now defunct SFNY parties through mutual bay homies talking about our podcast. It took me a minute to realize it was the same dj who made the all vinyl mix, Beautiful Sounds, .

His latest, Gray Areas 2 presented by PLSTK, is a trippy concoction of future sounds and bass heavy mostly instrumental grooves. No this is not “dub step” or “trap music” (although the less trained ear will quickly think so) but more reminiscent of jungle and broken beat. The first part Gray Areas, was so named because in the age of a million and one subgenres, its all pretty much a gray area. This is some good work music or Sunday-at-home-cause-you-are-hungover-but-still-want-to-get-ish-done music. Or that’s what I listen to it for. Definitely a good break from my usual listening choices of late and a refreshing mix of new and remixed tracks. Listen below and check him out on twitter, facebook, and sound cloud.

The War | Marvelous Marvin Hagler vs. Tommy “Hitman” Hearns

On this day (April 15th) in boxing history, one of the greatest matches, quite possibly the greatest match to ever happened. Back in the day, when the best fought the best and there wasn’t a million belts. This era was during the 80s when Thomas Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Roberto Duran and Sugar Ray Leonard also known as the Fabulous Four, fought each other through different weight classes and though a series of fights. In total, their was eight fights, and out of those eight, Hagler vs Hearns is remembered as the best of the bunch.
If you want non-stop action, this is the fight, it is as face paced as the Rocky Films.
If you want heart, Hearns broke his hand early in the first round and kept punching until (well you see the pic above).

These were the days before HBO’s 24/7, before we knew how much money boxers made, before fighters were able to pick and choose their opponents (see Mayweather). This was the 80s, where superfights got made. And Hagler vs Hearns was and is still unrivaled, two legends laying their life on the line in the ring. Check out the greatest eight minutes in boxing history, also known as “The War.”

Top 5 Movies to see in May 2013

Everyone knows the summer blockbuster season doesn’t begin until that first weekend in May. This year is no different as some of the most anticipated movies of the year drop in May. Personally, I’m excited to see a resurgence of sci-fi moving into the forefront of today’s feature films.

Part of the TOT’s mission is to bring you the best of the best so you can forget the rest. So without further adieu here is the Top 5 Movies you should see in May 2013:

Iron Man 3
May 3rd : Trailer

Kicking off the season we have the first film in what’s being called Marvel’s Phase Two movie collection. Starring Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man fighting an army of automated Iron Man Armors sounds awesome in my book. I just hope Ben Kingsley is a better Mandorian than he looks. That camo and douche bag shades isn’t instilling much confidence in me though. (see left.)

Star Trek Into Darkness
May 17th : Trailer

The Enterprise returns with a sequel to 2009′s release. While I’ve only allowed myself to watch the teaser trailer I’m thoroughly excited to see this movie. The original movie has played a huge in the new flood of Sci-Fi movies being released this year. Oblivion, After Earth, Elysium, Gravity, Pacific Rim all owe some credit to Star Trek’s success.

Fast & Furious 6
May 24th : Trailer

Vin Diesel, The Rock, Paul Walker and the rest of the Fast 5 crew return for a battle against a rival crew. When I see a cargo plane forced to land by 4 cars then a 5th car jumps through the FRONT of that newly crashed plane you can basically guarantee my ticket is already sold.

The Hangover part III
May 24th : Trailer

The Wolf Pack is back with the conclusion to the Bad Decision trilogy! The Hangover formula is supposedly been switched up for the finale and hopefully going back to Vegas will bring the magic back.

The Purge
May 31st : Trailer

Possibly the most original story I’ve heard in a while: In a world where crime and poverty is at an all-time low, the government has created one day a year, for 12 hours, all crime is legal called The Purge. The concept is crazy and makes you think about if this was a real concept what would you do? Would you rob, steal, kill? Or would you lock down your house and hide out and survive the night? I can’t wait for this movie to get an insight into what a world like this would be like.

They Reminisce Over You (T.R.O.Y.)

Remember tuning in to Video Music Box on those old school TVs to get your Hip Hop Fix. You know the ones we’re talking about, the TVs with the top and bottom dial (VHF and UHF). And we’re talking about when Video Music Box was on channel 31, not channel 25. Remember when NYC joined the rest of the free world and allowed us to have cable. You could tune into MTV (a lot of Rock at that time), BET or the Box, to get your video fix.

Forget TV for a minute and go back to Hot 103.5 (aka Hot 97: Where Hip Hop Lives). Remember sitting in front of your tape deck holding down the pause button waiting for your favorite song to come on and praying the radio DJ won’t talk over the track before it ends. Then going to school and letting your friends listen to your commerical and Radio DJ free tape. Were you one of those people who took it and extra step and wrote the track name and artist on your bootleg tape….lol. I know I was.

Anyway, what better song to reminisce about good times before bills and stress of “The Real World,” then T.R.O.Y?

Dating Tips: How Soon Is Too Soon to have sex?

What’s good my fellow Tot’s.? This is Ant coming at you with some new stuff. They got me blogging and I’m not used to putting myself on “paper”; I’m used to just being me… doing me.

For those of you who don’t know, I’m a Virgo and if you follow astrology, will know that Virgos are affectionate people. And being that I am an affectionate person, I like sometimes (OK… most times) to express myself through action… physical action. HOWEVER… there are these “social rules” about certain “actions” being TOO SOON. So it got me thinking… HOW SOON IS TOO SOON?

Now I’ve been in relationships since I was 21 (DAMN!!!). It’s to the point where my boys call me “KING BOOnan. Now when I was dating these ladies, before we made it official, I never had a time frame on when to make the next move… meaning SEX. Matter of fact, I had sex with every girlfriend before we became official. Now I know a lot of people may say “as soon as we have sex too soon its never the same” or “it just destroys whatever we was trying to build”.

BUT if you ask Mr. Singleton, I say its GOING TO HAPPEN ANYWAY so why not sooner?? If two people have chemistry and are feeling each other in that way, why not act upon it. I know that some people will worry about what the other might think of them if they act “too soon”. Sex is physical, emotional and mental act, and should always be decided by the individuals involved and not from anybody else.

Now again, this is my opinion. I’m not pulling a Steve Harvey… I’m not a love doctor. I just go by what works for me and everybody should go by their own pace of what works for them.

Facebook Home – I think I’ll pass

Facebook Home is the new Android app from Mark Zuckerberg that will replace your home screen with a portal directly to your friend’s emo status updates. This new app will launch April 12th for select Android phones. Sorry iOS users and everyone with an Android phone older than your current contract, you won’t be able to run Facebook Home.

This new app sounds good in theory but it sounds like its only cool if you REALLY love Facebook. Once installed Facebook Home integrates directly into your phone replacing the home screen and every time you look at your phone you’ll see pics of your friends kids, their great trips and what ever they happen to be eating for dinner… you know, food porn. This is called Cover Flow and is supposedly the killer feature. I like the idea of full screen photos being used as updates and the demo they showed looked amazing. Great photography will have that effect. Unfortunately, only a hand full of my friends are great photographers. The rest of them are drunks and stay at home dads, the quality of photos that would dominate my home screen would be out right terrible.

You might ask, “If Facebook Home is my new home screen and controls how I see my FB notifications, what happens to the 40 other social networks I’m attached to?” Facebook Home does become a message center that funnels all notifications through the Home app, which is a good idea… This feature only appears if you have the HTC First, which is a new phone and exclusive to AT&T. If you’re like me and rocking a 2 yr old phone then you’ll only get Facebook updates on your home screen.

Facebook is toting this as the next big thing in the mobile yet I’m not getting that feeling. Its starting off with a few big hurdles to cross in order to enjoy this app:

It replaces your home screen yet doesn’t manage ALL notifications
Doesn’t and possibly won’t have an iOS version
This app is for people who live and die with Facebook.

I’m not sold on this app. I have to actually use it but truth be told I don’t think this is for me. I don’t care about FB to any extent this would be that useful to me. Does Facebook Home generate any interest for you?

Memorable Stage Dives, Falls, and Fainting

Don’t let the image above fool you. This isn’t about Stage dives, for S.E.O. purposes, I add the title stage dives. The real title should read, Stage Falls, or Stage Fails. We have people falling off the stage, falling on the stage, to people flat out fainting on stage. Here are some of the most memorable stage falls in one place.

Steven Tyler: The Aerosmith frontman suffered injuries to his shoulder, neck and head after tumbling from the stage in South Dakota in August. He’s OK now.

Jojo: Not be confused with Rev Run’s son, this Jojo is from K-Ci & Jojo. Around the 1:50 mark Jojo takes a mean spill. Looking at this again it’s more sad than funny. But he is OK.

Columbus Short: While at a Step Show the Actor/Dancer decided to wear sunglasses indoors and then proceed to walk off the stage, Looney Tunes style.

Kelsey Grammer: Frazier aka Kelsey Grammer has left the building. Instead of moving and continuing, Grammer stays in the spot he has fallen in and wallows in his own self pity.

Beyonce: Not sure if this is a actually a stage fall or part of one of Beyonce dance moves.

How to tie a Bow-Tie: A Gentleman’s Guide

Awight fellas, it’s time to step your fashion game up. While I should start with just normal ties (don’t worry, I’ll post that later), tying a bow-tie is a well worn tradition that many do not know how to do. Clip on’s are cool (see Modern Day Mogul) but the old school value of doing it yourself gives you a sense of pride ( see Intertwined for my main source). Luckily, I have awesome friends (s/o to Tim Grae and Illustrator Phil Mamuyac) whose dapper style and bow-tie know how they imparted on me. CMJ 2012

Normally we cover The Roots Picnic in Philly but this year TOT is switching it up and plan to cover CMJ 2012. Taking place October 16th -20th they’ve added an impressive line up so far features literally hundreds of artists such as Ghostface Killah, GZA, Jane Bang, Jennah Bell, Killer Mike, Maya Azucena, Q-Tip, just to name a few. There’s a good chance some special guests are gonna pop up at some point during the week. A complete list of this years artists can be found on CMJ’s website.

Along with the Music Marathon, you also have all conferences and panels that will be taking place. With over 90 industry panels, if you have any interest in the music industry you’ll surely find some great information.

Are you a victim of IOAYKI? Hangovers vs Age

Hey.. Hey… fuckkkkkk!

That’s how my body gets when its 3 am and I am half drunk, thinking about how the hell am I going to get home. I just had about 9 drinks… Yes, my team is weekend alcoholics and once we start, you better not be a light weight. When I’m bent, I find myself in bars or lounges staring at people for no damn reason at all or just with the mad face. If you know me I tend to keep a mean face on when I am not feeling it. Don’t we all get like that???? I’ve come to realize I can’t have 9 drinks and act like I am having a good time. And I can’t dance for 7 hours anymore… Hold on, hold on… sorry about that, if a good ass DJ is rocking the turn tables then maybe I can put the legs in over time.

I know somebody is going through the same problems so I took some time to do some research myself and came up with a name for the problem. If you’re feeling like you’ve had too many and your two step is now a two step and a stumble. This feeling is called “It’s over and you know it” (IOAYKI) Syndrome. What that means is, when you get this sickness (and you will) it’s about time you start finding things to do before 10 pm because you can’t hang like you used to.

I knew something was wrong with me when I started sleeping on chairs in hotel lounges with a drink in my hand (Duane finds me all the time). I start asking myself “Why the fuck did I come out today?”

Yea, yea I am S.M.H as well but we all go through it no matter how much your dress cost, no matter how fly your outfit looks after 1 am and those drinks set in, it’s all downhill from there.

Here are some signs are have IOAYKI:

1. If you tell people this songs reminds you of your kids.

2. You keep looking at your damn watch.

3. Your ass is drunk after one shot!

So Instead of 12am, let’s hit the bar on a Saturday afternoon, eat some wings and maybe even take a walk and smoke some Mother Earth for second. After that it might be around 4 we can hit a spot with some music, drink for about an hour or so because of course is happy hour. When all said and done it’s around 930 and the trains are still running and you’re brain is still functioning.

Fellas, we’ve all been there. You have been hanging out with a chick…oops… broad who you like but its always been undefined why you were hanging out. The conversation is dope. She’s into/tolerates the dumb hobbies you love (#nerdalert, fantasy sports, action movies etc.) She laughs at all your corny jokes. You guys talk every day via txt msg, facebook or gchat. You build up the courage to tell her how you feel and she responds… ”I care for so much I don’t want to ruin our friendship…”

My friend welcome to the friend zone. The most dreaded category to be in the eyes of someone you’re attracted to. Mainly because you get all fun of being in a relationship (dinner dates, random hangouts, movie nights) with none of the benefits (dirty pics, make up sex, quickies during lunch.) I been in this game for years…uhh, it made me an animal, there’s rules to this shit… I wrote you a manual…

Determine how you feel about this woman from jump. The longer you take to decide what you want from her: friend, girlfriend or roof jumper, the higher the chance is you’ll get that golden ticket to the friend zone like that fat kid in Willie Wonka.
“Ayo, Are we dating? are we fucking? are we best friends? are we something in between that?” That’s a line from Childish Gambino – Heartbeat. But it speaks volumes. Don’t fuck around with this tip. Find out the nature of your relationship. Once you put this question out there though, understand you can’t take it back. A woman’s mind is like the Internet and neither ever forget.
If you want her and she wants Tom, retreat and regroup. Some guys think persistence is key but to me, held wrong, persistence is the key to the friend zone door. If she clearly tells you she just wants to be friends, fall back and be friends from a distance. You can’t win her over with flowers, surprise dates to the movies or trips out of town. You will still be that friend at the end of the night… Just a really great friend. Great friends get kissed on the head but not the one you want.
Don’t be Will to her Grace. You can’t be her best friend and discuss her cycle and console her when she thinks feels fat or unsexy. Let her bestie/BFF do that. For every carton of haagan daas you deliver at that time of the month the more comfortable you make your room at the Friendmada Inn.
Don’t discuss anyone she’s currently dating. If she’s comfortable discussing other dudes (or maybe ladies) with you and asking for advice you are already in the friend zone homie. “So, I went on a date with this guy from work…” This is def con 5 right here. This is that Matrix moment when you realize you’ve been living a lie and the whole sexy lingerie world you thought you were living is really some other dudes sweatpants and over-sized shirts.

Follow these rules you’ll have mad bread to break up… Seriously, look at these rules as guidelines to a more relaxed life. Ending up in the friend zone when you wanted to land in her End zone is a horrible experience every man has to go through. But hopefully you’ll only have to do it once. Did I miss something? Wait….Zumunda isn’t a real Country?

We’ve all been duped in the game of life. Whether it’s believing in Santa Claus when there isn’t a chimney in your apartment, let alone building. How about the Easter Bunny, tooth fairy, or Mr. Sandman, the list goes on and on. But what happens when you have a bit of common sense aka no more fairy tales from your parents, and are allowed to do research. If you ever get a chance to meet me, I’m full of useless information I shouldn’t retain. It’s so bad I won’t give you guys an example. So what happens when a movie from your pre-adolescent years has lied to you? Granted I know Coming to America is a fictional story. There is no real life Prince Akeem that came to Queens to find his Queen. What I thought was true was that Zumunda was a real country. They used Africa, America and Queens, why make up Zumunda? Why make a grown man realize that he should read a bit more and know things like this. Well at least I knew who Saul was when the credits rolled up. Couldn’t imagine how I would react if I found that out today.

Cam throws a cocktail party with his good friend Mike Morris a few times a year and Mike graciously let us record our final episodes during the party. We invited previous guests including Ms. Phia, Anslem “NWSO” Samuel, Nicole Tatem, “Kno” Cliff Washington, Dash Harris, Charles De Veaux, Katy Walker from My M.O. and the party guests themselves to help us celebrate season 2 of ToT.
